Tender, seasoned beef patties browned until flavorful, then simmered in a rich onion gravy made with caramelized onions, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, and garlic. Serve with mashed potatoes, noodles, or rice for a hearty comfort-food dinner.
Ingredients
Method
- Make the patties: Combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, Dijon mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, parsley, thyme, salt, and pepper. Mix gently just until combined.
- Shape: Divide the mixture into 6 equal portions and form into oval patties about ¾-inch thick.
- Brown the patties: Heat olive oil and 1 tablespoon butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Brown patties for 3–4 minutes per side. Remove and set aside; they do not need to be fully cooked yet.
- Cook the onions: Reduce heat to medium and add sliced onions to the same skillet. Cook for 8–12 minutes, stirring often, until soft and golden. Add garlic during the final 1–2 minutes.
- Make the gravy: Add 3 tablespoons butter, then stir in flour and cook for 1–2 minutes. Gradually stir in beef broth until smooth and slightly thickened. Add Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, soy sauce, thyme, and black pepper. Taste and add salt if needed.
- Finish cooking: Return the patties to the skillet and spoon the onion gravy over them. Cover and simmer over low heat for 10–15 minutes, until the patties are cooked through and the gravy is rich and thick.
- Serve: Sprinkle with fresh parsley and serve hot with mashed potatoes, buttered noodles, rice, or roasted vegetables.
Notes
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3–4 days. Reheat gently, adding a splash of beef broth if the gravy becomes too thick.
