Servings: 6

Ingredients

For the Salisbury Steak
  • lbs ground beef
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • cup milk
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • ½ tsp smoked paprika
  • ½ tsp dried parsley
  • ½ tsp dried thyme
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp butter
For the Onion Gravy
  • 2 large yellow onions thinly sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tsp soy sauce
  • ½ tsp dried thyme
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tsp fresh parsley chopped

Method

  1. Make the patties: Combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, Dijon mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, parsley, thyme, salt, and pepper. Mix gently just until combined.
  2. Shape: Divide the mixture into 6 equal portions and form into oval patties about ¾-inch thick.
  3. Brown the patties: Heat olive oil and 1 tablespoon butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Brown patties for 3–4 minutes per side. Remove and set aside; they do not need to be fully cooked yet.
  4. Cook the onions: Reduce heat to medium and add sliced onions to the same skillet. Cook for 8–12 minutes, stirring often, until soft and golden. Add garlic during the final 1–2 minutes.
  5. Make the gravy: Add 3 tablespoons butter, then stir in flour and cook for 1–2 minutes. Gradually stir in beef broth until smooth and slightly thickened. Add Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, soy sauce, thyme, and black pepper. Taste and add salt if needed.
  6. Finish cooking: Return the patties to the skillet and spoon the onion gravy over them. Cover and simmer over low heat for 10–15 minutes, until the patties are cooked through and the gravy is rich and thick.
  7. Serve: Sprinkle with fresh parsley and serve hot with mashed potatoes, buttered noodles, rice, or roasted vegetables.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3–4 days. Reheat gently, adding a splash of beef broth if the gravy becomes too thick.
